Active flow control technologies have the capacity to answer the challenges of next-generation aerospace applications and to enable greener and safer energy conversion systems.

This Lecture Series reviews the state-of-the-art in active flow control methods and their application to a wide range of engineering fields. The course outlines current research directions in academia and industry.

The course starts with introductory lectures on the fundamentals of modern active flow control with notions of fluid mechanics, instability and control theory. Recent progresses in sensors, actuators and control strategies are presented. A number of control techniques for aircraft wing airfoils, drag reduction, aeroacoustics, high-speed and cavity flows are discussed. Emphasis is given to applications of active flow control in gas turbine engines, including control of combustion instabilities and turbomachinery flows.

This Lecture Series is a forum where knowledge and expertise from world-renown scientists and leaders in the active flow control field will meet the demands of industries and laboratories. The course appeals not only the specialists, but in particular new users of active flow control technology.

The Lecture Series director is Prof. Sergio Lavagnoli of the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics.
