Innovative optimization and design techniques for modern aircraft (manned or UAV/UCAV) and engine systems aiming at maximum performance in a multidisciplinary context (aerodynamic efficiency, safety, drag, losses, weight, strength, heat fluxes, emission, noise, …), are now rapidly moving from research labs to industrial real and virtual platforms. To reach concurrently this level of excellence, emergent optimization methodologies require more and more robust and efficient associated software for a daily use in industrial collaborative design environments.

Innovative optimization and design techniques, both for aircraft (manned or unmanned UAV/UCAV) and engine systems, are now rapidly moving from research labs to industrial integrated platforms used by collaborative teams. These platforms aim at maximum performance in multidisciplinary context by combining several criteria like aerodynamic efficiency, safety, drag, losses, weight, strength, heat fluxes, emission, noise. To reach concurrently this level of excellence, emergent optimization and design methodologies require more and more robust and efficient associated software for daily use in industrial collaborative design environments.

The fifth symposium on the doctoral research of the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics took place during the period March 10 to 12, 2014. The doctoral students have presented the progress of their research work carried out in the three departments: Aeronautics and Aerospace, Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics, Turbomachinery and Propulsion. The first year students have presented a poster on their research plans and some preliminary results, while the most advanced students have proposed a presentation followed by a session of questions.

These proceedings aim at giving a snapshot of the research done at the time of the Symposium. Its content is not reviewed by an editorial board and is the property and responsibility of the candidates and their supervisory teams. The idea is to encourage all candidates to write papers on their research even if this research is still under development or if the associated results are only partial. The goal is to train on communication at the best level possible and to offer a yearly compilation of the research accomplished at the Phd level. Learn More

The purpose othis lecture was to review progress in various aspects of centrifugal compressor design and optimization. Special emphasis was put on unsteady flows and component vibration. An introductory lecture describes the measurement techniques used in centrifugal compressors and the flow phenomena appearing from experimental observations. It is followed by a lecture on modern design and performance prediction methods. Subsequent lectures deal with different aspects of unsteady flows and flow induced vibrations such as : - blade vibrations and excitations due to unsteady flows;- rotordynamics with emphasis on instability problems;- flow in labyrinth seals and the effect on rotor stability; - flow in volutes and the effect of outlet distortion on impeller anq diffuser flows.
