The fifth symposium on the doctoral research of the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics took place during the period March 10 to 12, 2014. The doctoral students have presented the progress of their research work carried out in the three departments: Aeronautics and Aerospace, Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics, Turbomachinery and Propulsion. The first year students have presented a poster on their research plans and some preliminary results, while the most advanced students have proposed a presentation followed by a session of questions.

These proceedings aim at giving a snapshot of the research done at the time of the Symposium. Its content is not reviewed by an editorial board and is the property and responsibility of the candidates and their supervisory teams. The idea is to encourage all candidates to write papers on their research even if this research is still under development or if the associated results are only partial. The goal is to train on communication at the best level possible and to offer a yearly compilation of the research accomplished at the Phd level. Learn More

    Unsteady aerodynamics - article pay-per-view - 25 € /article

Unsteady phenomena are of paramount importance in many domains of both fundamental and applied fluid mechanics, ranging from vortex dynamics to flow on lifting surfaces and around bluff bodies. In recent years, progress in both experimental and numerical techniques has led to a significant increase in the ability to understand and predict the most complex problems related to flow unsteadiness. The purpose of the present lecture series was to survey the overall state of the art in the whole domain therefore a short introduction to unsteady flow phenomena was followed by specific sections devoted to the most important domains, namely flow around bluff bodies, vortex dynamics, unsteady boundary layers and by an up to date review of the available numerical and experimental techniques. By its contents, the lecture series addressed itself to both researchers interested in keeping abreast of the latest developments in unsteady aerodynamics and industrial users confronted with practical problems related to flow unsteadiness.
