    Plasma flow control: Fundamentals, modeling and applications article pay-per-view 25€/article

    Advances in aero-thermodynamics, aero-elasticity and aero-acoustics largely depend on the understanding of the flow structures, and the ability to control them. The first lecture note reviews the various approaches that are being followed for plasma flow control. The fundamental interaction mechanisms are presented together with the challenges associated to their implementation depending on the flow regime. A presentation on the mechanisms for the generation of momentum transfer using offset dielectric barrier discharges follows, focusing on the physics of the breakdown formation. The next lecture note addresses phenomenological models that can be used in conjunction with CFD codes, from simple algebraic equations to complex set of partial difference equations. The first part is concluded with the use of DBD actuators in various applications for internal and external flow control, over a range of Mach numbers from 0.1 to 3.5, in a wide static pressure range from 0.1 to 9 bar.

The second part of the proceedings starts with the analysis of the goveming equations of glow discharges in supersonic and hypersonic flows. The estimations of characteristics time scales in high speed flow highlight the influence of gas motion on the electro-dynamic structure. The second course note demonstrates successful plasma applications in the lab at high speed, for drag reduction, plasma-induced generation of shock waves, and artificial flow separation. The third lecture note describes recent experimental and computational research in identifying and modeling the gasdynamic and therrnochemical processes of the plasmoid generation with micro—wave and laser discharge.

    This lecture series was the first organized series of courses relevant to Particle Image Displacement Velocimetry (also sometimes called Speckle Velocimetry). This technique recently has aroused considerable interest and a continuously increasing number of research laboratories are presently considering the development and application of this new technique. It was therefore necessary to allow interested scientists to have a first synthetic view of the state-of-the-art of this novel technique which allows the measurement of a full velocity field in a plane at a single instant. The first part of the lecture series presentation was devoted to a presentation of the fundamentals of PIDV. This allowed newcomers to have a comprehensive view of the basics of this powerful measurement technique. In the second part, the lectures dealt with more specific topics such as scattering of light by small particles, photographic parameters and description of practical systems. The different processing techniques proposed in the literature were reviewed and discussed. Finally, the more advanced methods allowing the determination of flow direction, field density and the measurement of three components of velocity were presented together with novel optical processing methods relying on the latest electro-optical techniques. The third part of this event was devoted to the presentation of selected papers by attendees to the lecture series.
