Please find herewith the proceedings of the first Symposium of the  “VKI PhD’s research” that took place at the Institute from 1 to 3 March 2010.

This event, allowing interaction among the students and invited guests combined with publishing their ( partial) results through proceedings are of high importance for the VKI research.

In fact, up to now, such an event was really missing.

It has to be remarked that the doctoral candidate students of the VKI play a key role in strengthening the expertise in experimental and numerical/physical modeling of the Institute; their research deployed at the Institute forms the basis for further developments and in many cases finds real life industrial applications.

We truly hope that this first volume will be followed by many more and that the reputation of this event will spread quickly in the different research communities. The symposium is free of charge so as to attract as many people that the VKI can host.

The first week of March will always be dedicated to this event.

These proceedings aim at giving a snapshot of the research done at the time of the Symposium. Its content is not reviewed by an editorial board and is the property and responsibility of the candidates and their supervisory teams. The idea is to encourage all candidates to write papers on their research even if this research is still under development or if the associated results are only partial. The goal is to train on communication at the best level possible and to offer a yearly compilation of the research accomplished at the Phd level.

The present proceeding is registered under an ISBN number and may be referred to in any further publication.

In addition to the presentations of the PhD candidates we had this year the pleasure of guest Keynote lecturers:

  • Dr Nagi Mansour from NASA for a keynote lecture on “Turbulent Convection and Oscillations in the Solar Interior”
  • Raul Vasquez Diaz from Industria de Turbo Propulsores S.A. ITP as a keynote lecturer on “Low Pressure Turbine technology in the last decade and future challenges”
  • Dr Gregoire Casalis from ONERA for a keynote lecture on “Instabilities and ONERA research”

Finally we also gave the opportunity to the first year Phd students to present a poster of their planned research.
