Experimental Aeroacoustics

These Lecture notes are published in the framework of the European Network of excellence for aeronautical application and advanced measuring technologies, known by the acronym EWA. (European Windtunnel Association). The network consists of 14 member organizations (including VKI) from 8 European countries.

The aim of EWA is to integrate and strengthen European Aeronautical Research by building lasting relationships and inter-dependencies between the major European wind tunnel operators and developers of advanced measuring technologies. See http://www.eu-ewa.aero/ for more details.

The purpose of this course notes is to provide state-of-the-art information on experimental aeroacoustics, with special emphasis on acoustic measurements including wind tunnels and aeronautical applications. Topics which are treated in detail include: introductory courses on aeroacoustics, beam forming methods, acoustic holography, noise associated with propellers, helicopters and rotors, jet noise, aeroacoustical analogy and design of wind tunnels for aeroacoustics. The notes are written by experienced lecturers from academic and research institutions, with a large number of members of the EWA network.

The lecture notes are addressed both to researchers and to engineers active in aeroacoustic measurements in wind tunnels but also to newcomers to the field who desire a review of the state-of-art of the on-going activities in aeroacoustic measurements and analysis.
