Transport phenomena in porous media are very important in a wide range of applications including chemical and nuclear indus­tries, oil recovery, civil engineering and energy related pro­blems.

The objectives of this lecture series was to present a methodology for developing well posed mathematical models of transport in porous media and to give examples of recent advances in modeling transport phenomena of special interest.

In the first session, modeling based on a continuum approach involving multiple extensive quantities and multiple media was introduced. Representative elementary volume and averaging definitions lead to the derivation of microscopic balance equa­tions.

The following session was devoted to the provision of information on the structural features of porous media. Stochastic descriptions of the properties of porous media, homogeneity and heterogeneity were presented. Simulation of the random structure of porous media was discussed. Succeeding lectures showed how the understanding of phenomena at pore level permits the derivation of the general macroscopic balance equations of mass, momentum and energy in porous media. Emphasis was placed on the complete model with discussion of the problem of initial and boundary conditions.

Several lectures were devoted to the modeling of multiphase flow in porous media; wettability, capillarity and hyneresis phenomena were considered; the relative permeability concept was introduced. The last session was assigned to the presentation of typical applications especially in connection with groundwater flow and pollution of aquifer, boiling and dryout problematics in
liquid saturated self heated particulate beds, drying processes and spatial heat transport systems based on thermal capillary pumping.
