Details

The fourth symposium on the doctoral research of the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics took place during the period March 4 to 6, 2013. The doctoral students have presented the progress of their research work carried out in the three departments: Aeronautics and Aerospace, Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics, Turbomachinery and Propulsion. The first year students have presented a poster on their research plans and some preliminary results, while the most advanced students have proposed a twenty minute presentation followed by a session of questions.

This event was attended by the faculty of the von Karman Institute as well as by some colleagues from universities and industrial partners. The Symposium was open to external attendees free of charge. In addition to the presentations of the PhD candidates, we had the pleasure to welcome prominent keynote lecturers who have opened each day the Symposium:

  • Marc Schyns, ANS Deputy Director and MYRRHA Project R&D Program Manager, “MYRRHA - Multipurpose hYbrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications - Contributing to the 3rd Pillar of the European Strategy for Partitioning &Transmutation – Project status end 2012”.
  • Thomas Doerr, Chief of Combustion Aero-Thermals, Rolls-Royce Deutschland Ltd & Co KG, “Challenges and current researches in Combustion”.
  • Kurt Sermeus, EADS, Cassidian Air Systems, “CFD in applied aerodynamics - examples from the aircraft industry”.

This year, the best presentation award has been attributed to Lasse Müller for his research on Design of heavy-liquid metal pump of the MYRRHA research reactor. We would like to congratulate him on his achievement. The illustrated cover art of these proceedings is based on his research results.

This proceedings volume contains 31 papers which are divided into the following topics: “Noise and aeroacoustics,” “Multiphase flow,” “Aero-thermal investigations in turbomachinery,” “Optimization in turbomachinery,” “Numerical modeling of aerothermodynamics during re-entry,” “In-flight experiments,” “Hypersonic flows in ground facility,” “Development of Advanced CFD”.

We would like to emphasize that this publication serves as a tool for communication and aims to enhance exchange between the doctoral candidates, and the faculty and external attendees. The annual publication of their results in proceedings is of crucial importance to the VKI research providing a thorough review of the different activities within the three departments.

As such, the doctoral candidate students of the VKI play a key role in strengthening the expertise in experimental and numerical/physical modeling of the Institute. In addition to basic research, works carried out at the Institute often leads to implementation of real life industrial applications critical to the fluid dynamics community.

This edition contains a new who’s who section. The present proceedings are registered under an ISBN number and may be referred to in any further publication.
