Details

The third Symposium on the doctoral research took place at of the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics took place during the period March 5 to 7, 2012. The doctoral students have presented the progress of their research work carried out in the three departments: Aeronautics and Aerospace, Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics, Turbomachinery and Propulsion. The first year students have presented a poster on their research plans and some preliminary results, while candidates in their 2nd and 3rd yearthe most advanced students have proposed a 20 twenty minutes presentation followed by 10 minutesa session of questions.

This event was attended by the faculty of the von Karman Institute as well as by some colleagues from other universities and /or industrial partners. The Symposium was totallywas open to external attendees and the entrance was free of charge. In addition to the presentations of the PhD candidates, we had the pleasure to welcome prominent keynote lecturers for the opening ofwho have opened each day of the Symposium:

  • Jérôme Anthoine from ONERA, as an invited keynote lecturer on “Hybrid chemical propulsion for space transportation”
  • Cam Tropea from Technische Universität DarmstadtTU Darmstadt, as an invited keynote lecturer on “Can we expect novel developments in spray diagnostics?”
  • Yannick Le Maoult from Université de Toulouse , as an invited keynote lecturer on “Thermoreflectometry and phosphors thermometry applied to materials science”

This year, the honorary best presentation Prize award has been attributed on an equal footing to was awarded to Delphine Laboureur for her research entitled:on Experimental characterization and modeling of hazards (: BLEVE) and Boilover (: small scale Boilover experiments) and to Davide Masutti for his presentation research on Natural and Induced Transition on a 7 degree Half-Cone at Mach 6. We would like to congratulate them for on their performanceachievement. The illustrated covert art of these proceedings is based on their research results. An image illustrating their research is used for the present cover.

This e present proceedings volume contains 43 papers which are divided into the following topics: Transition from Laminar to Turbulent Flow, Plasma Flow, CFD and Modeling for Re-entry Flow, Flow during Industrial Hazard, Atmospheric Flow, Multiphase Flow and Heat and Mass Transfer Flow, Aeroacoustics, Flow in Turbines, Flow in Compressors, Engine Analysis and Improvements, Multidisciplinary Optimization in Turbomachinery, Static and Dynamic Stability of Re-entry Vehicle.

We would like to emphasize that this publication serves as a tool for communication and aims to enhance exchange between the doctoral candidates and the faculty and external attendees.

We would like to remind here, that this event, is aiming to communicate and to optimize the exchange between the doctoral candidates and the invited guests. The annual publication of their partial results in through proceedings is of crucial importance for theto research at the VKI researc providing a thorough review of the different activities within the three departments.h.

As such, the doctoral candidate students of the VKI play a key role in strengthening the expertise in experimental and numerical/physical modeling of the Institute. In addition to basic research, works carried out at the Institute often leads to implementation of Their research deployed at the Institute is often leading to implementation to real life industrial applications that should be strongly congratulated, recognized and acknowledged. critical to the fluid dynamics community.

The present proceedings is are registered under an ISBN number and may be referred to in any further publication.
