Solid particle erosion problems are of great concern in gas turbines, steam turbines, boilers, fluidized beds, aircraft engines and many other systems. Erosion may cause a significant decrease in the operating lifetime of gas turbine engines or other systems operating in dusty environments or when ash particles are present, as in coal gasification. Particle trajectory studies provide information on particle impact and location, and erosion studies indicate the amount of material removed with each particle impact. The course presented the principles involved and the state-of-the-art in erosion prediction for engines subjected to solid particle ingestion.
Particle deposition may have as detrimental an effect on turbine performance as blade erosion. The mechanism of particle formation and particle adhesion to the blade surfaces were discussed in depth with particular emphasis on fluidized bed and coal-fired turbine applications.
