Quick Overview

Applications for this type of turbines range from small gas turbine engines for light helicopters through airborne and land-based auxiliary power units, automotive powerplants, turboexpanders, mechanical drive steam turbines, solar powerplants working with organic fluids and turbopumps for liquid fuel rockets. Depending on the application, the turbines may be of the radial, axial or mixed flow type. The combination of small blade heights and high Mach numbers and turning angles makes the design of these turbines particularly arduous, especially if the rotor inlet Mach numbers are supersonic. Extensive design experience and the use of advanced design tools can overcome these problems as was demonstrated by the group of lecturers who were selected for this course. The lectures addressed primarily turbine design and development engineers. But testing techniques and advanced calculation methods were also discussed.
