Abstract

The dissertation is concerned with the analysis of the phenomenon of catalysis in its various aspects. First, a literature review of the physics background, the nomenclature and of typically obtained values for air is presented. It is concluded that no consistent data is available and further research is necessary.

Then, the mechanisms of catalysis are investigated. A sufficiently simple configuration is employed consisting of dissociated carbon dioxide gas on an ideal platinum surface. In a next step, the impact of non-ideal surfaces is analyzed. In both investigations, it is found that the mechanisms of catalysis are complex, partially non-intuitive and can depend on the environment. Finally, the obtained knowledge is applied to design an in-flight catalysis experiment that is capable of providing relevant data for the research in the discipline.
