Nonmodal theory generalizes the eigenvalue-based, spectral approach to hydrodynamic stability or receptivity problems to capture short-time instabilities, describe non-resonant responses to harmonic forcing and determine coherent flow structures that optimally take advantage of transient energy-amplification mechanisms. In its generalization, it lays the foundation for the treatment of time-dependent or periodic flows as well as the description of non-parallel and global stability and receptivity phenomena. These notes give a first introduction to the main concepts of nonmodal stability and receptivity theory, exemplified on generic wall-bounded shear flows.
